If you have only 3 days but want to experience the Sahara Desert, this tour provides the ideal balance of travel time, cultural experiences, and desert adventure. You’ll return to Marrakech refreshed and inspired.
Your adventure begins with an 8:00 AM pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech. You’ll head into the High Atlas Mountains via the winding Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (2,260 m), Morocco’s highest road pass. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of mountain peaks and traditional Berber villages.
Your first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a stunning fortified village (ksar) and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once an important stop on the caravan routes, it has appeared in many films and series, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. You’ll have time to wander through the narrow alleys, climb to the top for panoramic views, and see how families still live within the ancient walls.
After lunch near Ait Ben Haddou, you’ll continue to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa” for its film studios and desert backdrops. You’ll then travel through the green Skoura Oasis, dotted with palm trees and old kasbahs, before reaching the Dades Valley. Your day ends with an overnight stay in a comfortable hotel overlooking the dramatic valley scenery.
Drive: Marrakech to Dades Valley – approx. 330 km (around 6–7 hours with stops)
After breakfast, you’ll continue through the Dades Valley, passing traditional clay villages and admiring the unusual rock formations known as “Monkey Fingers.”
Your next stop is the Todra Gorges, one of Morocco’s most impressive natural sights. The towering red cliffs—up to 300 meters high—form a narrow canyon that attracts climbers, photographers, and travelers from around the world. You’ll walk through the gorge and feel how high the rock walls rise on either side.
You then head southeast, passing through Erfoud, a town known for its fossils and dates, before arriving in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Here, you’ll be welcomed with a glass of traditional mint tea before starting your camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Your camel caravan takes you into the heart of the Sahara. You’ll stop on a high dune to watch the sun set, and the sand shift through shades of gold, orange, and red. After about an hour’s ride, you reach your luxury desert camp, where you can settle into your private tent with a comfortable bed and en-suite bathroom.
In the evening, you’ll enjoy a traditional Berber dinner, music around the campfire, and some of the clearest night skies you’re ever likely to see.
Drive: Dades Valley to Merzouga – approx. 260 km (around 4–5 hours)
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes—the soft light and silence of the desert at dawn are unforgettable. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll ride camels back to Merzouga (or take a 4×4 if you prefer), where you can freshen up before the journey back.
Your return route to Marrakech is just as scenic, taking you through the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley. This wide oasis is lined with thousands of date palms and dotted with traditional kasbahs, offering a striking contrast to the surrounding desert.
You’ll stop for lunch in Ouarzazate, then cross the High Atlas Mountains once more before reaching Marrakech in the evening, bringing your 3-day Sahara adventure to a close.
