This private desert tour from Marrakech to Tangier is a relaxed, immersive way to experience the best of Morocco. Over five days, you’ll cross changing landscapes, discover centuries of history, and connect with the country’s rich and welcoming culture.
Your journey begins in lively Marrakech, with its historic Medina, colorful souks, and buzzing squares. From there, you’ll travel through the scenic Atlas Mountains, passing traditional Berber villages and enjoying sweeping views that show a very different side of Morocco.
Continuing north, you’ll explore the ancient city of Fes, famous for its maze-like old town, well-preserved medieval architecture, and vibrant daily life. You’ll then make your way to Chefchaouen, the beloved “Blue City,” where narrow lanes and blue-washed houses create a peaceful, dreamlike atmosphere.
The tour ends in Tangier, a coastal crossroads where African, European, and Mediterranean influences all meet. Throughout the trip, you’ll travel in comfort on a fully private tour, with the flexibility to go at your own pace, stop for photos, savor local cuisine, and enjoy genuine encounters with the people who call this beautiful country home.
Your driver will pick you up at 8:00 a.m. from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. You’ll head east into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the impressive Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Along the way, enjoy changing landscapes, colorful valleys, and traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides.
Your first main stop is the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most iconic fortress-villages and the backdrop to many famous films. You’ll have free time to explore the kasbah, visit the Atlas Studios in nearby Ouarzazate if you wish, and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, continue southeast through the palm groves of Skoura and the fragrant Valley of Roses before arriving in the lush Dades Valley. Here you’ll have dinner and spend the night in a comfortable hotel surrounded by dramatic rock formations and green oases.
After breakfast, take a short walk in the Dades Valley to soak in the views and unique rock formations. Then you’ll head toward the Todra Valley, where the landscape shifts again. At Todra Gorge, steep limestone cliffs rise high above a narrow riverbed – a perfect place to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery. You can have lunch here or later along the way.
In the afternoon, continue driving through the Tafilalte region, passing small towns like Tinjdad and Erfoud, until the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon near Merzouga.
Here, you’ll meet your camels and set off on an unforgettable one-hour trek into the Sahara, riding over the golden dunes as the sun begins to set. Climb a dune to watch the spectacular sunset, then continue to your luxury Berber desert camp. Enjoy dinner, music, star-filled skies, and a peaceful night in the desert.
Wake up early to watch the sunrise paint the dunes in shades of gold and orange. After breakfast at the camp, ride your camel back across the Erg Chebbi dunes to meet your driver.
You’ll then set off north toward Fes, passing through Erfoud and the province of Errachidia. Stop at viewpoints over the Ziz Valley and its beautiful palm groves to take photos and enjoy the scenery.
Lunch will be in Midelt, nestled between the High and Middle Atlas ranges. From there, the road winds through forests of cork oak and giant cedar, where you may spot Barbary macaques, one of the only native monkey species in the Atlas Mountains.
Continue through the Middle Atlas and the alpine-style town of Ifrane before arriving in Fes in the late afternoon or evening. You’ll spend the night in a traditional riad in Fes El Bali, the old medina.
In the morning, enjoy a half-day guided tour of Fes, the oldest of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Fes El Bali, the medieval old town, is remarkably well preserved and still full of life.
With your local guide, you’ll wander through the narrow streets of the medina, visit the beautiful Bou Inania Medersa, see traditional souks and craftsmen at work, and stop at the Kairaouine Mosque (one of the world’s oldest universities) to admire its stunning courtyard from the main gate. You’ll also visit important sites such as the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II.
After lunch, you’ll leave Fes and drive about four hours through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, the famous “Blue City.” Once there, you’ll have free time to explore its winding lanes and blue-painted alleys, filled with small shops, cafés, and local artisans. Overnight in Chefchaouen.
On the final day of your Morocco tour, enjoy a relaxed morning in Chefchaouen. You can wander through the medina, visit the main square, or simply sit in a café and watch daily life go by.
Later, we’ll drive you to Tangier. Depending on your schedule and interests, there may be time to see some of the city’s main attractions, such as Cape Spartel and the viewpoints over the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
