2-Day Itinerary from Marrakech to Merzouga

Experience the Sahara in just 2 days — a fast-paced journey through the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, and the Erg Chebbi dunes.

1

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Merzouga

Your Sahara adventure begins early — around 7:00 a.m. — with pick-up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. We leave the Red City behind and climb into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. The winding road offers breathtaking panoramic views, and we'll make several stops for photos and coffee at scenic viewpoints overlooking Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.

Our first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco's most spectacular fortified villages. This ancient ksar has starred in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, and Lawrence of Arabia. You'll have time to walk its mud-brick alleys and climb to the top for stunning views over the Ounila Valley.

After lunch in a local restaurant, we continue through Ouarzazate — Africa's Hollywood — where we'll see the Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Film Studios from outside. We then drive through the Valley of the Roses and the Skoura palm grove, passing countless kasbahs hidden among the trees.

The landscape becomes increasingly arid as we approach the desert. Passing through Tinghir and the edge of the Todra Valley, we finally reach Merzouga by late afternoon. Here, your camel awaits. Ride into the towering Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun begins to set, painting the sand in shades of gold and violet. Try sandboarding if you're feeling adventurous.

Arrive at your desert camp in time for mint tea, a traditional Moroccan dinner, and Berber drumming around the campfire. Sleep in a comfortable private tent beneath a canopy of stars — or drag your mattress outside and sleep under the open sky if you prefer.

2

Day 2: Merzouga Sunrise → Draa Valley → Anti-Atlas → Ouarzazate → Marrakech

Rise early for what may be the best sunrise of your life. Watch the dunes shift from deep purple to rose to brilliant gold as the sun climbs over the Sahara. After breakfast and a shower at camp, camel-trek back to meet your driver (or take a 4x4 transfer if you prefer).

We begin the return journey along a different route, driving through the Draa Valley — the longest river valley in Morocco — where we'll stop to admire the lush palm groves and ancient kasbahs contrasting with the arid landscape. Continue through the Anti-Atlas Mountains, with their dramatic rock formations and acacia trees typical of pre-desert terrain.

We'll stop for lunch in Ouarzazate, then cross the High Atlas once more via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, arriving back in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening. Your driver will drop you at your accommodation, where your 2-day Sahara adventure ends — but the memories will last forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about our 2-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour.

Is 2 days enough for a Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour?

Two days gives you a taste of the Sahara — you'll ride camels, sleep in a desert camp, and see Ait Ben Haddou. However, it involves long driving days (approximately 8–9 hours each way). If you want a more relaxed pace with time to explore Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, and shorter driving days, we recommend our 3-day or 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tours.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?

The distance is approximately 564 km (350 miles) each way. With scenic stops at viewpoints, Ait Ben Haddou, and lunch breaks, Day 1 typically takes about 9–10 hours from door to desert camp. Day 2 is a similar length for the return. The roads are in good condition, and your driver will make regular stops for stretching, photos, and coffee.

What time does the tour start and end?

Pick-up is around 7:00 a.m. on Day 1 to ensure we reach the desert in time for sunset. Drop-off on Day 2 is typically between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. in Marrakech, depending on traffic and how long you spend at stops along the way.

Is this a private tour or a shared group tour?

This is a fully private tour. You'll travel only with your own family, friends, or group in a private vehicle with your own driver. Your schedule and stops can be adjusted to your interests.

Is the camel ride included, and how long does it take?

Yes, the sunset camel trek is included. The ride takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, with a stop on top of a high dune to watch the sunset and take photos. A sunrise camel trek is also available the next morning. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a 4x4 transfer to the camp instead at no extra cost.

What is the desert camp like?

Our desert camp features comfortable private tents with proper beds, mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Standard camps provide clean shared bathroom facilities nearby. Luxury camps offer en-suite private bathrooms and hot showers inside each tent. All camps include a dining tent, traditional Berber music around the campfire, and dinner/breakfast. The camp has electricity from solar panels.

What happens to my luggage during the camel trek?

You don't need to carry everything on the camel. Pack a small soft backpack with overnight essentials (toiletries, camera, warm layer, water). Your main luggage stays in the vehicle, which is securely parked at the desert edge, or transported to the camp by a separate 4x4 if needed.

What should I pack for the Sahara Desert?

Pack light but smart. Essentials include: sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50+), a wide-brimmed hat or scarf, closed-toe shoes or sneakers for camel riding, a warm fleece or jacket for the evening (desert nights can be surprisingly cool), a portable charger, and a camera. Long pants are recommended for the camel trek. Towels and toilet paper are provided at camp, but bringing your own is always wise.

Are bathrooms and hot showers available at the desert camp?

Yes. Our standard camps provide clean shared facilities with warm water available in the evenings. Luxury camps feature private en-suite bathrooms with hot showers inside each tent. We'll confirm your exact camp setup before booking so you know exactly what to expect.

Is the tour suitable for families, seniors, or travelers with back problems?

The tour is suitable for most travelers, but please be aware of the long driving days. Camel rides are slow and guided, and 4x4 transfers are available for anyone who prefers not to ride. If you have back problems or motion sickness, please let us know in advance — the mountain roads have many switchbacks. We've hosted travelers of all ages, but honesty about the driving time is important.

Can the tour end in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech?

Yes, on request we can arrange a one-way transfer to Fes at the end of Day 2 instead of returning to Marrakech. This would involve a different route through the Middle Atlas and may incur a small additional charge. Contact us to discuss this option.

Are vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free meals available?

Yes. Moroccan cuisine is naturally accommodating — tagines, couscous, and salads can easily be prepared vegetarian or vegan. Please inform us of any dietary requirements when booking, and we'll ensure the camp is prepared.

What is the best time of year to take this tour?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summer (June to August) is extremely hot, with desert temperatures exceeding 45°C (113°F), but the tour still runs with early starts. Winter (December to February) brings cold desert nights but fewer crowds and lower prices.

Is Wi-Fi available during the tour?

The desert camp has limited or no connectivity — consider it a chance to truly disconnect. Most stops along the route in towns like Ouarzazate have mobile signal if you need to check in.

How much should I tip the driver and camp staff?

Tipping is not mandatory but greatly appreciated. For your driver, €5–10 per day per group is standard. Camp staff usually receive €2–3 per person for the night in the desert.

Will I have time to properly explore Ait Ben Haddou and other stops?

On the 2-day tour, stops are shorter due to the distance we need to cover. You'll have approximately 45–60 minutes at Ait Ben Haddou — enough to walk through the ksar and climb to the top for photos. If you want more time to explore Ouarzazate's film studios, Todra Gorge, and the Dades Valley at a relaxed pace, consider upgrading to our 3-day or 4-day tour.

We only had a weekend in Morocco and this 2-day tour was absolutely perfect for us. Yes, the drives are long — but our driver made them fun with stops at incredible viewpoints and great stories about Berber culture. Riding camels at sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes was definitely the highlight of our trip. The camp was comfortable, the food was delicious, and the sunrise was breathtaking. If you're short on time, don't hesitate — just book it!

Highly recommend this 2-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour! The organization was perfect from start to finish. Be prepared for long days in the car — about 9 hours each way — but the scenery changes so dramatically that it never feels boring. Ait Ben Haddou was stunning, and sleeping under a sky full of stars in the desert camp was beautiful. Our driver was professional and always knew when to stop for the best photos. We loved every second of it.

My private 2-day Marrakech desert tour to Merzouga was an absolutely interesting trip! The journey through the Atlas Mountains was awe-inspiring, and visiting Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah felt like stepping back in time. Riding camels into the Sahara at sunset was magical, and the services were amazing. Our guide's knowledge and hospitality made the trip even more special. I can't believe we packed so much adventure into just two days! It was the perfect blend of culture, nature, and Moroccan charm.

An incredible experience overall! The Sahara sunset and sunrise were worth every minute of the long drive. Our only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the second day's drive back felt very long after a short night in the desert. That said, the camp was far more comfortable than expected — real beds, hot showers, and amazing tagine. If you have the time, definitely consider the 3-day version. But if you're tight on schedule like we were, this 2-day tour delivers exactly what it promises.
