A 2-night camel trek in Merzouga is the deepest way to experience the Sahara without rushing. Over two full days, you will ride camels across the Erg Chebbi dunes — the tallest sand sea in Morocco, with peaks reaching 150 meters — sleep in two different private Berber camps, and enjoy a relaxed lunch at a small desert oasis surrounded by palm trees.
This is a fully private tour. You will not be mixed with strangers. On Day 1, you trek into the dunes for sunset and sleep in a traditional nomadic camp with Berber music around the fire. On Day 2, you venture further into the desert to a hidden oasis for lunch, then continue to a second camp for another night under the stars. On Day 3, wake early for the sunrise and ride back to Merzouga after breakfast.
All tents are private. You can choose a standard camp with shared bathroom facilities or upgrade to a luxury camp with an ensuite bathroom, hot shower, and 24-hour electricity inside your tent.
Detailed Itinerary: 2-Night Camel Trek & Desert Camp
Experience two unforgettable nights in the Sahara Desert with camel trekking, sunset views, and Berber hospitality.
Day 1: Merzouga → Camel Trek → Sunset → First Desert Camp
16:30 — Meet at our guesthouse in Hassi Labied village (4 km from Merzouga center). Park your car securely, store your main luggage, and pack a small overnight bag with essentials.
17:00 — Meet your camel and experienced guide. After a brief introduction on mounting and sitting comfortably, begin your camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The ride lasts roughly 1.5 hours, with photo stops of the camel caravan against the dunes.
18:30 — Pause on a high dune to watch the Sahara sunset. This is the perfect time for photography and optional sandboarding.
19:30 — Arrive at the first desert camp. You will be shown to your private tent and served refreshing Moroccan mint tea.
20:30 — Dinner is served in the main tent or under the stars. Expect authentic dishes such as chicken or vegetable tagine, Moroccan salad, fresh bread, and seasonal fruit.
21:30 — After dinner, gather around the campfire for traditional Berber drumming and singing. Take a short walk away from the camp for incredible stargazing before bed.
Overnight — Sleep in your private tent with mattresses, blankets, and pillows.
Day 2: Sunrise → Camel Trek → Oasis → Second Desert Camp
06:00 — Wake early to climb the nearest dune and watch the Sahara sunrise.
08:00 — Return to camp for a hearty Berber breakfast (bread, jam, olive oil, pancakes, coffee, and tea).
09:00 — Begin the second day of your camel trek, riding deeper into the dunes for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
11:00 — Stop at a small desert oasis with palm trees for a relaxing lunch. Enjoy the shade, the sound of birds, and a break from the sun.
15:00 — Continue the camel trek to your second desert camp, arriving in time for another sunset over the dunes.
19:30 — Dinner and another evening of Berber music around the campfire. The second camp offers a quieter, more remote atmosphere.
Overnight — Second night in a private tent under the stars.
Day 3: Sunrise → Breakfast → Camel Trek Back → Merzouga
06:00 — Wake up for your final Sahara sunrise and capture the last photos of the trip.
08:00 — Enjoy breakfast at the second camp.

What is the difference between standard and luxury desert camps?
Standard camps offer private tents with shared bathroom facilities and basic bedding. Luxury camps feature ensuite bathrooms inside your tent, hot showers, 24-hour electricity, hotel-quality bedding, and sometimes A/C in summer. All camps are positioned at the edge of Erg Chebbi dunes — this is standard across all operators.
Is the tent private or will I share with strangers?
Your tent is completely private. Each couple gets their own tent. Families are accommodated in adjacent tents (parents in one, children in another) or together if preferred. You will never share with strangers.
What should I wear and bring for the camel trek?
Wear long pants (jeans or linen) to avoid skin irritation on the camel, and closed-toe shoes with a back strap — sandals are not recommended. Bring a warm jacket or fleece for cold nights (desert temperatures drop significantly after sunset), sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a small flashlight or headlamp, a power bank, and a refillable water bottle. If you wear contact lenses, bring glasses instead — the desert air can be dusty.
Do I need a sleeping bag?
No. Your private tent includes a comfortable bed with mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Our team provides exceptional service to keep you warm, though a thin sleeping bag liner can add extra comfort in winter.
How long is the camel ride each day?
Day 1: approximately 1.5 hours to reach the first camp. Day 2: about 1.5–2 hours to reach the oasis, then another 1.5 hours to the second camp. Day 3: roughly 1.5 hours back to Merzouga. If you prefer not to ride on any leg, a 4x4 transfer can be arranged.
Can I skip the camel ride and go to camp by car?
Yes. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a 4x4 transfer from Merzouga village directly to the camp at no extra cost. You will still enjoy the same dinner, campfire, and sunrise experience.
Is the camp deep inside the dunes?
Camps are positioned at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — this is normal and standard across all operators, as camps are no longer permitted deep inside the dunes. What matters is the quick access to the sand for sunset and sunrise, which is just minutes away on foot.
What food is served at the desert camp?
Dinner is typically a traditional Moroccan tagine (chicken, beef, or vegetable), served with Moroccan salad, fresh bread, and seasonal fruit. Breakfast includes bread, jam, olive oil, pancakes, coffee, and tea. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets — please inform us at least 24 hours in advance.
Is there WiFi or phone signal at the camp?
Most desert camps have no WiFi and limited phone signal. This is actually a good thing — it allows you to fully disconnect and immerse yourself in the desert experience. We recommend downloading anything you need beforehand.
What is the best time of year for a 2-night camel trek?
October to April is ideal, with daytime temperatures of 15–25°C and cool nights. Spring (March–May) offers blooming wildflowers. Summer (June–August) can exceed 45°C and is not recommended for camel trekking. Winter nights can drop to 0–5°C, so bring warm layers.
Can I bring my luggage on the camel?
You should only bring a small backpack with essentials for the trek (camera, water, sunscreen, warm layer). Heavy luggage is taken directly to the camp or stored securely at our guesthouse in Hassi Labied, where you can also shower before and after the trek.
