Have you ever wondered if you can reach the Sahara Desert from Fes without losing half your trip to driving? You can. This 2-day desert tour from Fes to Merzouga is the shortest, most direct route to the Erg Chebbi dunes — approximately 470 km through the stunning Middle Atlas Mountains.
Over two unforgettable days, you will feed Barbary macaques in the Azrou Cedar Forest, drive through the "Switzerland of Morocco" in Ifrane, cross the dramatic Ziz Valley with its 5 million date palms, and ride camels into the golden dunes at sunset. You will sleep in a luxury desert camp under a sky full of stars, wake to a Saharan sunrise, and return to Fes by evening — all without backtracking or wasting a single hour.
A typical 2-day Fes to Merzouga desert tour covers Ifrane, Azrou cedar forest, Midelt, Ziz Valley, Erfoud, Erg Chebbi camel trekking, a luxury camp night, sunrise over the dunes, and Rissani — the most time-efficient Sahara experience available from Morocco's cultural capital.
2-Day Itinerary from Fes to the Sahara
Perfectly paced for a weekend escape to the dunes.
Day 1: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou Cedar Forest → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga → Camel Trek → Luxury Desert Camp
Your 2-day Sahara adventure begins with an early pickup from your Fes riad or the airport. We leave the ancient medina behind and drive south into the Middle Atlas Mountains.
Our first stop is Ifrane, a town built by the French in 1929 with alpine architecture, clean streets, and a cool climate that earned it the nickname "Switzerland of Morocco." It is home to one of Morocco's finest universities and even has a ski resort — Michlifen — just outside town.
We continue to the Azrou Cedar Forest, where you can see and feed Barbary macaques (wild monkeys) in their natural habitat. These friendly primates are accustomed to visitors and will eagerly take unsalted peanuts or almonds from your hand. The ancient cedar trees here are over 400 years old.
After a scenic drive through the Middle Atlas, we stop in Midelt for lunch. This town sits between the Middle and High Atlas ranges and is known for apples, mining, and dramatic mountain views.
In the afternoon, the landscape changes dramatically. We descend through the Tizi N'Talghoumt Pass and enter the Ziz Valley, home to 5 million date palms — Morocco's second-longest palm grove. The contrast between the arid canyon walls and the lush green oasis below is breathtaking.
We pass through Errachidia and Erfoud (the fossil capital) before arriving in Merzouga by late afternoon. After mint tea at your hotel, meet your camel guide for the sunset trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The 1 to 1.5 hour ride moves at a gentle pace, with a stop on a high dune to watch the sun disappear.
At the camp, settle into your private luxury tent with proper beds, en-suite bathroom, and hot shower. Dinner is a traditional Moroccan feast, followed by Berber drumming around the campfire. Climb the dunes afterward for stargazing in one of the darkest skies in Morocco.
Driving time: approximately 7 to 8 hours with scenic stops. Camel trek: 1 to 1.5 hours.
Day 2: Sunrise in the Sahara → Rissani → Ziz Valley → Ifrane → Fes
Wake before dawn for the sunrise over Erg Chebbi. The silence and color changes — from deep violet to blazing orange — are unforgettable. After breakfast at the camp, return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4.
If today falls on a market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), we visit the Rissani souk — one of Morocco's most authentic traditional markets. Donkeys carry goods through narrow alleys while vendors sell dates, spices, carpets, and livestock. It is chaotic, colorful, and completely unspoiled by tourism. If it is not market day, we visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif and the historic ksar.
We then begin the journey back to Fes, retracing our route through the Ziz Valley, Midelt, and the Azrou Cedar Forest. We stop for lunch and photos along the way, arriving back in Fes by early evening (between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM).
Driving time: approximately 7 to 8 hours with stops.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2-Day Fes to Merzouga Tour
Real questions travelers ask about this 2-day Fes to Merzouga desert tour.
How long is the drive from Fes to Merzouga?
The drive from Fes to Merzouga is approximately 470 km (292 miles) and takes 7 to 8 hours by car, depending on road conditions and stops. The route passes through Ifrane, Azrou, Midelt, Errachidia, Erfoud, and finally Merzouga. It is a scenic but full day of driving, which is why a 2-day tour is the minimum recommended.
Can you do a day trip to the Sahara Desert from Fes?
No. It takes 8–9 hours to reach Merzouga from Fes one way, so a day trip is not possible. You would spend the entire day in a car and never reach the dunes with enough daylight. A minimum of 2 days is required to properly experience the Sahara with a camel trek, sunset, overnight camp, and sunrise.
Is 2 days enough to see the Sahara from Fes?
Yes. A 2-day tour from Fes gives you a full afternoon, evening, night, and morning in the desert. You will experience the camel trek, sunset, dinner under the stars, Berber music, sunrise, and sandboarding. The only thing you miss is extra activities like Khamlia or a 4×4 desert excursion, which our 3-day or 4-day tours include.
What is included in the 2-day Fes to Merzouga tour price?
The tour includes pick-up and drop-off in Fes, private 4×4 transport with A/C and fuel, an English- or Spanish-speaking driver, 1 night in a luxury desert camp with dinner and breakfast, camel trekking in Erg Chebbi, sandboarding, and mint tea at the camp.
What is not included?
Lunches, drinks, entry fees (if any), travel insurance, and tips. Tips for the driver (50–100 MAD/day for the group) and camp staff (20–50 MAD) are customary but optional.
What happens to my luggage during the camel ride?
You leave your main luggage at the hotel in Merzouga, and it is transported to the camp separately by 4×4. You only need to carry a small backpack with your essentials for the camel trek (toiletries, camera, warm layers, power bank). Your luggage will be waiting for you at the camp.
How long is the camel ride?
The camel ride to the camp takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours at a gentle pace, with a stop for sunset photos. The return ride on Day 2 is similar. If you prefer, you can skip the camel ride and be driven to the camp by 4×4 at no extra charge.
Is the camel trek uncomfortable?
No. The camels walk slowly, led on foot by an experienced handler. The saddles are padded, and the pace is relaxed. Most travelers find it far more comfortable than expected. Wear long trousers (linen or cotton) to avoid any chafing.
Can I skip the camel ride and take a 4×4 to the camp?
Yes. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can drive you to the camp by 4×4 instead. This is a popular option for travelers with back issues, mobility concerns, or those who simply prefer a smoother ride. Just let us know when booking.
What should I pack for the desert camping?
We recommend packing light, breathable layers for warm days, a warm jacket or fleece for cold desert nights (temperatures can drop to 5°C even in spring), a scarf or shesh for sun and blowing sand, closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera. Do not forget a power bank for charging your devices. Bring toilet paper or tissues for roadside stops.
How cold does the desert get at night?
Spring and autumn nights are cool but pleasant (12–18°C). Winter nights (December–February) can drop close to freezing, so pack serious warm layers. Summer nights (June–August) are mild, but daytime heat is extreme (40–50°C). Our luxury camp provides thick blankets and proper beds.
What is the best time to visit the Sahara from Fes?
The best months are March to May and September to November. April and October are peak season. Summer (June–August) is not recommended due to extreme heat. Winter days are pleasant but nights are cold. Late March to early April is ideal, when the Middle Atlas is green and the desert is comfortable.
Is the tour private or shared?
This is a fully private tour. Your group has its own 4×4 vehicle and driver. We do not offer shared group departures on this route because the long drive is far more comfortable in a private car with flexible stops.
Is the tour suitable for children and families?
Yes. The route is family-friendly, and children especially love feeding the monkeys in Azrou and the camel ride. Baby seats are available upon request. The camp has proper beds — not sleeping on the ground.
Do you offer hotel pickup and drop-off?
Yes. We pick you up directly from your riad, hotel, or Fes–Saïs Airport (FEZ) on Day 1, and drop you off at the same location on Day 2. Airport pickup is included at no extra charge.
Are vegetarian or vegan meals available?
Yes. Traditional Moroccan cuisine includes many vegetable tagines, couscous, and salads. If you have dietary requirements — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergies — let us know when booking so we can inform the camp chef in advance.
Can I book this if I only have 2 days in Fes?
Yes. This tour is specifically designed for travelers with limited time. You leave Fes early on Day 1 and return by early evening on Day 2, giving you the full Sahara experience without missing your onward plans.
What is the difference between this 2-day Fes tour and the Marrakech desert tour?
The Fes route crosses the Middle Atlas (Ifrane, Azrou monkeys, cedar forests, Ziz Valley) and reaches Merzouga in 7–8 hours. The Marrakech route crosses the High Atlas (Tizi N'Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades Valley) and takes 9–10 hours. The Fes route is shorter, greener, and equally scenic — but you see different landscapes.

"We only had two days left in Morocco and thought the Sahara was impossible from Fes. This tour proved us wrong. The drive through the Middle Atlas was beautiful — Ifrane looked like Switzerland, and the monkeys in Azrou were a huge hit with our kids. The camel ride at sunset was magical, and the luxury camp had a proper hot shower in the middle of the desert. We were back in Fes by 6:30 PM on Day 2 with memories for a lifetime. Incredible value."
TripAdvisor ★★★★★
"I compared the 2-day tours from Marrakech and Fes. The Fes route is 2 hours shorter each way, which means less car time and more energy for the desert. The Ziz Valley viewpoint took my breath away. Our driver was professional, the camp was stunning, and the sunrise was the most peaceful moment of my entire Morocco trip. If you are based in Fes, this is the tour to book."
TripAdvisor ★★★★★
"The Barbary monkeys in Azrou were the unexpected highlight — they literally ate from our hands! Then the desert completely blew us away. The camp staff sang and drummed around the fire until late, and we saw more stars than I knew existed. The driver managed the long drives perfectly with great lunch stops. This was the best part of our 10-day Morocco itinerary."
TripAdvisor ★★★★★
"I was worried about spending 7 hours in a car, but the scenery changes every hour — mountains, forests, canyons, palm groves, and finally dunes. The driver knew exactly when to stop for photos. Rissani souk on Tuesday was wild — donkeys, dates, and carpets everywhere. The camel trek was gentle, and the sandboarding was hilarious. Perfectly organized from start to finish."

"Our 2-day tour from Fes was absolutely incredible! From feeding the monkeys in Azrou to riding camels at sunset over Erg Chebbi, every moment was magical. Our guide was extremely friendly and made the long journey comfortable with well-timed stops. The luxury camp exceeded expectations — proper beds, hot shower, and amazing food.
