Have you ever dreamed of crossing Morocco from the Red City to the cultural capital, with the Sahara Desert at the heart of the journey? This 6-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes takes you over the dramatic High Atlas Mountains, through ancient ksars and kasbahs, and into the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. Ride camels at sunset, sleep in a luxury desert camp under a sky full of stars, and wake to a Saharan sunrise before continuing north to the medieval medina of Fes. With a private English-speaking driver, comfortable 4×4 transport, and hand-picked riads, this is the most popular one-way desert route in Morocco — and for good reason.
A typical 6-day Morocco desert itinerary from Marrakech covers the major southern highlights: the Tizi N'Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra Gorges, the Erg Chebbi dunes, the Ziz Valley, the Azrou cedar forests, and the imperial city of Fes. This route follows the classic south-to-north desert crossing, featuring camel rides, ancient kasbahs, and imperial medinas — all without backtracking.
6-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour Itinerary
Follow this day-by-day journey from Marrakech through the Sahara to Fes, with camel trekking, desert camping, and Morocco’s iconic landscapes along the way.
Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley
Your 6-day desert tour from Marrakech begins with an early morning pickup from your riad or the airport. We leave the Red City behind and ascend the winding roads of the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi N'Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters. The switchback roads offer panoramic views of Berber villages and terraced valleys. Keep an eye out for Mount Toubkal, Morocco's highest peak at 4,167 meters.
We stop for lunch near Ait Ben Haddou, the famous UNESCO World Heritage ksar that has appeared in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy. Walk through the ancient mud-brick lanes and climb to the rooftop for views over the Ouarzazate Valley.
After a photo stop at the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate, we drive through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing fragrant Kela'a M'gouna (the Valley of the Roses). We arrive in Boumalne Dades for dinner and overnight at a riad overlooking the Dades River.
Driving time: approximately 6 hours with stops.
Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga Sahara → Camel Trek → Luxury Camp
After breakfast, we explore the dramatic Dades Gorges and the famous serpentine road before continuing to the Todra Gorge. Here, 300-meter canyon walls rise from the riverbed — a spectacular spot for a short walk and photos.
We continue east through Tinjdad and Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops and date palms. As the landscape shifts to desert, we arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon.
A camel guide will meet you for an unforgettable sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours at a gentle pace. When we reach the camp, you will be shown to your private tent. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, followed by a Berber drumming and dancing party around the campfire. Climb the dunes afterward to gaze at the stars in the zero-light-pollution sky.
Driving time: approximately 4.5 hours. Camel trek: 1–1.5 hours.
Day 3: Merzouga Sunrise → Khamlia → Rissani → Desert Exploration → Overnight in Merzouga
We wake you early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes — the silence and color changes from purple to blazing orange are worth every minute of lost sleep. After breakfast at the camp, you can choose to return to Merzouga by camel or by 4×4.
Today is dedicated to experiencing the desert deeply. We visit Khamlia, a traditional Saharan village known for Gnawa music — a hypnotic blend of sub-Saharan rhythms played on steel guembri instruments. Enjoy tea and a live performance.
Next, we visit Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region and the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty. Explore the lively souk (open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays) and visit Maison Tuareg for traditional crafts, carpets, and jewelry.
In the afternoon, you can try sandboarding on the dunes, take a 4×4 desert excursion around Erg Chebbi, or simply relax by the pool at your Merzouga hotel. We spend the night at a comfortable riad/hotel at the edge of the dunes with dinner included.
Note: This is a relaxed day with shorter driving distances.
Day 4: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Azrou Cedar Forest → Ifrane → Fes
After breakfast, we bid farewell to the desert and head north through the Ziz Valley, lined with Morocco's second-longest palm grove. The road climbs through the Middle Atlas, with a stop in Midelt for lunch — a town known for apples and mining, set between the Middle and High Atlas ranges.
We continue through the Azrou Cedar Forest, where you can see Barbary macaques in their natural habitat. Feel free to feed them as you stroll through the forest (unsalted peanuts or almonds are best).
Our next stop is Ifrane, known as the "Switzerland of Morocco" for its alpine architecture, clean streets, and cool climate. It was built by the French in the 1930s and is home to one of Morocco's finest universities.
We arrive in Fes by early evening and transfer you to your riad in the ancient medina for dinner and overnight.
Driving time: approximately 7–8 hours with scenic stops.
Day 5: Fes Guided Tour
Today you will explore Fes, Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital, with a certified local guide. Fes is home to the oldest university in the world — Al Quaraouiyine — and its medina is the largest car-free urban area on Earth.
We begin at the Royal Palace gate (Dar el-Makhzen), with its golden brass doors and intricate zellige tilework. We then enter the medina through the Blue Gate (Bab Bou Jeloud) and visit:
- Al Quaraouiyine Mosque and University (founded in 859 AD)
- The Bou Inania Madrasa, a masterpiece of Marinid architecture
- The Nejjarine Fountain and its beautiful woodwork museum
- The Chouara Tanneries, where leather has been dyed in stone vessels for over 1,000 years
- The Jewish Quarter (Mellah) and its restored synagogues
- The Moulay Idriss Mausoleum (viewed from outside)
You will have free time in the afternoon to shop in the souks or relax at your riad. Dinner and overnight in the same riad in Fes.
Note: Comfortable walking shoes are essential — the medina has over 9,000 narrow alleys.
Day 6: Fes → Volubilis → Meknes → Drop-off in Fes or Transfer to Casablanca
On the final day, we drive 1 hour to Volubilis, one of Morocco's most important archaeological sites. Explore the ancient Berber-Roman ruins, including stunning mosaic floors, the Triumphal Arch, and the Capitol. The site dates back to the 3rd century BC and offers sweeping views over the surrounding countryside.
Next, we drive 30 minutes to Meknes, the Ismaili capital and one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Visit Bab Al-Mansour — considered the most beautiful gate in Morocco — the Sahrij Souani basin, and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum.
After lunch in Meknes, we return to Fes for drop-off at your riad or the airport by approximately 6:00 PM.
Optional: If you prefer, we can continue to Casablanca or Rabat for an additional transfer fee. Contact us to customize your ending.
Driving time: approximately 3 hours of total driving plus sightseeing.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 6-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour
Real questions travelers ask before booking this 6-day Marrakech to Fes desert crossing.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert?
The direct drive from Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 560 km and takes 9–10 hours non-stop. Our 6-day tour breaks this into two manageable days via the Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades Valley, and Todra Gorge, so you never feel rushed. The longest single driving day is from Merzouga to Fes (Day 4), which is approximately 7–8 hours with scenic stops.
Is this a private tour or a shared group tour?
This is a private tour. Your group has its own 4×4 vehicle, driver, and schedule. This gives you far more flexibility with photo stops, timing, and travel pace compared with shared group tours. We can also customize the route depending on your interests.
Should I start in Marrakech or Fes?
Marrakech is the starting point for 85% of desert tours because it is closer to the southern mountains and desert entries. Starting in Marrakech lets you cross the High Atlas first, then relax into the desert, and finish in Fes — a natural south-to-north flow without backtracking. If you are already in Fes, we also offer this tour in reverse.
Is a private driver recommended over self-driving?
Yes. Hiring a private vehicle with a driver saves significant time and handles complex Atlas Mountain and desert navigation smoothly. You control the schedule, make spontaneous stops, and avoid the stress of winding mountain roads, police checkpoints, and parking in the medinas. For families or groups with luggage, door-to-door service is far more comfortable than buses or trains.
What is included in the tour price?
The tour includes pick-up from Marrakech and drop-off in Fes, private 4×4 or minibus with A/C, an English/Spanish-speaking driver/guide, 5 nights of hotel/riad accommodation with breakfast and dinner, camel rides in the Merzouga Sahara Desert, 1 night in a luxury desert camp, sandboarding, and a visit to a nomad family.
What is not included in the price?
The tour does not include entry fees to monuments, lunches, drinks, personal expenses, travel insurance, or tips. Tips for the driver (50–100 MAD/day for the group) and camp staff (20–50 MAD) are customary but not mandatory.
What happens with my luggage during the desert night?
You leave your main luggage at the hotel in Merzouga, and it is transported to the camp separately by vehicle. You only need to carry a small backpack with your essentials for the camel trek (toiletries, camera, warm layers, power bank). Other travelers recommend bringing a headlamp for nighttime bathroom trips.
Is the camel trek uncomfortable? What if I don't want to ride?
Not at the gentle pace we run it. The camels walk slowly, led on foot by an experienced handler, and the sunset ride to camp is only about 1 to 1.5 hours. If you would rather not ride, we can drive you to the camp by 4×4 instead — just let us know in advance.
What should I pack for the desert camping?
We recommend packing light, breathable layers for warm days, a warm jacket or fleece for cold desert nights (temperatures can drop to 5°C even in spring), a scarf or shesh for sun and blowing sand, closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera. Do not forget a power bank for charging your devices. Bring toilet paper or tissues for roadside stops.
How cold does the desert get at night?
It depends on the season. Spring and autumn nights are cool but pleasant (12–18°C). Winter nights (December–February) can drop close to freezing, so pack serious warm layers. Summer nights (June–August) are mild, but we strongly advise against summer tours because daytime temperatures can reach 45°C. Our camp provides plenty of blankets and the tents have proper beds.
What is the difference between Merzouga and Zagora?
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) offers real sand dunes — tall, golden landscapes and immersive desert experiences. It is ideal for 3+ day tours. Zagora is a rocky desert with limited dunes but is closer to Marrakech and suitable for shorter 2-day trips. For a true Sahara experience on a 6-day tour, Merzouga is the better choice.
Is the Sahara desert tour worth it?
Yes. Genuinely. Riding camels into the dunes, watching the sunset, sleeping under a sky full of stars, and waking up to sunrise over the Sahara is an experience you will never forget. As one recent traveler wrote: "It was honestly the best experience we have ever had."
What is the best time to visit the Moroccan desert from Marrakech?
The best months are March to May and September to November. April and October are peak season. Summer (June–August) can be dangerously hot (40–50°C), while winter nights (December–February) are cold but days remain pleasant. The single best window is late March to early April, when the Dades Valley almond trees are in bloom.
Is it safe to travel from Marrakech to the desert?
Yes, traveling from Marrakech to the Sahara is very safe with a licensed operator. The routes are driven daily, vehicles are maintained, and guides know the terrain. Morocco is a popular travel destination, and private tours are the most comfortable way to explore. The main risks are sun exposure and dehydration — both easily managed by drinking 2–3 liters of water per day.
Can I customize the itinerary?
Yes. The listed tour is a starting point. We can adjust the route depending on your travel dates, arrival city, departure city, group size, interests, and preferred comfort level. Whether you want photography stops, hiking, food experiences, or a history focus, we can tailor the itinerary. We can also extend the tour to include Chefchaouen, Casablanca, or Rabat.
What type of accommodation can I expect?
You will stay in carefully selected traditional riads and hotels that offer comfort and authentic Moroccan charm. In Dades and Fes, we use riads with rooftop terraces. The desert camp features comfortable tents with proper bedding, a dining area, and shared bathrooms. Luxury camp upgrades include private tents with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers.
Is the tour suitable for children and families?
Absolutely. Our desert tours are family-friendly and we can adapt the pace and activities to suit children or elderly travelers. Baby seats are available upon request. The camel trek is gentle, and the camps have proper beds — not sleeping on the ground.
Do you offer hotel pickup and drop-off?
Yes. We pick you up directly from your hotel, riad, or Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) on Day 1, and drop you off at your Fes accommodation or Fes–Saïs Airport (FEZ) on Day 6. Airport pickup is included at no extra charge.
Are vegetarian or vegan meals available?
Yes. Traditional Moroccan cuisine includes many vegetable tagines, couscous, and salads. If you have dietary requirements — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergies — be sure to let us know when booking so we can inform the riads and camp chef in advance.
Can I see the Sahara Desert in just 6 days starting from Marrakech?
Yes. This 6-day itinerary is specifically designed to make the journey comfortable by breaking it into manageable segments with overnight stops in Dades Valley and Merzouga. You will get a genuine Sahara experience — camel trek, sunset, stars, and sunrise — without rushing, plus a full guided day in Fes.
Can this tour be done in reverse, from Fes to Marrakech?
Yes. We offer this exact itinerary in reverse (Fes to Marrakech) with the same stops and pacing. The reverse route is equally popular and works well if your international flight arrives in Fes and departs from Marrakech.
