Your 3-day Sahara adventure begins with a pickup from your Errachidia hotel or the airport. Because you are already at the edge of the desert, there is no need for a grueling 10-hour drive from Marrakech. Within minutes, you are surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the Tafilalet region.
Our first stop is a panoramic viewpoint over the Ziz Valley, home to Morocco's second-longest palm grove. The sight of 5 million date palms stretching into the haze is a perfect introduction to the south. We continue to Erfoud, the "Gateway to the Sahara," where you can visit a local fossil workshop and see how ancient marine creatures from the Devonian period are polished into tables, sinks, and decorative pieces.
By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga. After a refreshing mint tea at your hotel, a camel guide will meet you for the highlight of the day: a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The ride takes about 1.5 hours at a gentle, unhurried pace. You will stop on a high dune to watch the sun sink below the horizon, painting the sand in shades of gold, purple, and burnt orange.
When we reach the camp, you will be shown to your private luxury tent with proper bedding, solar electricity, and an en-suite bathroom with hot shower. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, followed by a Berber drumming and dancing party around the campfire. Afterward, climb the dunes behind the camp for stargazing in one of the darkest skies in Morocco.

We wake you before dawn to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The silence of the desert at this hour is profound, and the color shift from deep violet to blazing orange is worth every minute of lost sleep. After breakfast at the camp, you can return to Merzouga by camel or by 4×4.
Today is dedicated to experiencing the desert deeply, not just passing through it. Our first stop is Khamlia, a small village on the edge of the dunes inhabited by descendants of sub-Saharan slaves brought to Morocco centuries ago. Here, you will enjoy live Gnawa music — a hypnotic, trance-like rhythm played on steel guembri instruments and iron castanets. Tea and a performance are included.
Next, we drive to Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet and the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty (the current royal family). If today falls on a market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), we will explore the lively souk, where locals trade everything from dates and spices to live sheep and handmade carpets. Visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif (viewed from outside) and the crumbling Ksar Oulad Abdelhalim.
In the afternoon, we embark on a 4×4 desert excursion around Erg Chebbi. We visit a nomad family living in traditional wool tents near the Algerian border, share tea with them, and learn about their way of life. We also stop at Lake Dayet Srij (when it has water) to spot migratory birds, including flamingos.
Before returning to your Merzouga riad for dinner, you will have time for sandboarding — racing down the steep faces of the dunes on a board. It is exhilarating, surprisingly easy, and makes for incredible photos.

For those who cannot get enough of the dunes, we offer a second sunrise camel ride or a final sandboarding session in the cool morning air. After breakfast at your riad, we begin the journey back to Errachidia.
We take a different route through the Tafilalet palm groves, stopping to see traditional khettara irrigation systems — ancient underground channels invented by the Berbers that still water the date palms today. We may stop at a local date cooperative to taste and purchase Medjool dates, known as the "king of dates."
We arrive back in Errachidia by mid-afternoon (around 5:00 PM), in time for your onward flight, bus connection, or hotel check-in. If you have a late flight, we can arrange a relaxed lunch in Errachidia before drop-off.

Errachidia is only 130 km from Merzouga, which takes approximately 2 hours by car. This makes Errachidia the closest major city and airport to the Erg Chebbi dunes. By comparison, driving from Marrakech takes 9–10 hours, and from Fes takes 7–8 hours.
Starting from Errachidia saves you 2 full days of driving compared to Marrakech. Instead of spending Day 1 and Day 2 in a car crossing the Atlas Mountains, you reach the Sahara on the first morning and have the entire afternoon and evening for camel trekking, sunset, and camp. You get more desert time, less car time.
This is a fully private tour. Your group has its own 4×4 vehicle, driver, and schedule. There are no shared group departures from Errachidia. This gives you complete flexibility with stops, timing, and travel pace.

The tour does not include lunches, drinks, entry fees (if any), travel insurance, or tips. Tips for the driver (50–100 MAD/day for the group) and camp staff (20–50 MAD) are customary but not mandatory.
You leave your main luggage at the hotel in Merzouga, and it stays there safely while you are at the camp. You only need to carry a small backpack with your essentials for the camel trek (toiletries, camera, warm layers, power bank). The camp provides blankets and proper beds.
Not at the gentle pace we run it. The camels walk slowly, led on foot by an experienced handler, and the sunset ride to camp is only about 1 to 1.5 hours. If you would rather not ride, we can drive you to the camp by 4×4 instead — just let us know in advance.
We recommend packing light, breathable layers for warm days, a warm jacket or fleece for cold desert nights (temperatures can drop to 5°C even in spring), a scarf or shesh for sun and blowing sand, closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera. Do not forget a power bank for charging your devices. Bring toilet paper or tissues for roadside stops.
It depends on the season. Spring and autumn nights are cool but pleasant (12–18°C). Winter nights (December–February) can drop close to freezing, so pack serious warm layers. Summer nights (June–August) are mild, but we strongly advise against summer tours because daytime temperatures can reach 45°C. Our luxury camp provides plenty of blankets and proper beds.
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) offers real sand dunes — tall, golden landscapes up to 150 meters high and immersive desert experiences. It is ideal for 2–3 day tours. Zagora is a rocky desert with limited dunes but is closer to Marrakech and suitable for shorter 2-day trips. For a true Sahara experience, Merzouga is the better choice.
