9-Day Morocco Itinerary from Casablanca: Imperial Cities & Sahara Desert

Day 1: Arrival in Casablanca

Welcome to Morocco! Upon landing at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, your driver will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the city center. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the chance to explore the city. We recommend a visit to the magnificent Hassan II Mosque — one of the largest mosques in Africa and one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. Its 210-metre minaret towers over the Atlantic, and the intricate marble, cedar wood, and zellige tile interiors are breathtaking. You might also stroll along the beachfront Corniche or visit Rick's Café, a restaurant inspired by the classic film. Overnight in Casablanca.

Day 2: Casablanca → Rabat → Rif Mountains → Chefchaouen

After breakfast, we begin our journey north to Rabat, Morocco's elegant capital and one of the country's four imperial cities. Enjoy a guided visit to the medieval Kasbah of the Udayas, a 12th-century fortress with whitewashed walls and blue shutters perched above the Atlantic. You'll also see the iconic Hassan Tower and the marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V.

After lunch, we drive through the scenic Rif Mountains, passing Berber villages and lush valleys, until the blue-washed walls of Chefchaouen come into view. Spend the evening wandering the narrow, stair-lined alleys of this artsy mountain town — a photographer's paradise. If time allows, catch the sunset from the Spanish Mosque for panoramic views over the blue city. Overnight in a charming riad in the medina.

Day 3: Chefchaouen → Volubilis → Meknes → Fes

Rise early to explore Chefchaouen's old medina without the crowds. The blend of Moroccan and Andalusian influence shines through in the bright-blue buildings around Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the restored kasbah. After breakfast, we leave the Blue Pearl behind and drive to Volubilis, one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander among ancient mosaics, triumphal arches, and temple columns as a local guide brings this 2,000-year-old city to life.

Continue to Moulay Idriss, one of Morocco's holiest cities, before reaching Meknes, the "Versailles of Morocco" under Sultan Moulay Ismail. Admire the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the Sahrij Swani basin, and the ornate Moulay Ismail Mausoleum. By late afternoon, we reach Fes, where you'll settle into a beautiful riad in the heart of the ancient medina.

Day 4: Fes Guided Tour

Today is dedicated to Fes el-Bali, the oldest of Morocco's imperial cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your local guide meets you after breakfast to navigate the labyrinth of narrow winding streets. Begin at the seven gates of the Royal Palace, then explore the Jewish quarter (Mellah) and the South Borj for a panoramic view over the ancient city.

Enter through the iconic Blue Gate (Bab Bou Jeloud) and discover the famous Chouara Tanneries, where hides are dyed in vibrant stone pits. Visit the University of Al-Qarawiyyin — the oldest continuously operating university in the world — and the exquisite Bou Inania Madrasa, a masterpiece of Marinid architecture. Stop at the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts and the Attarine Madrasa. After lunch in a traditional restaurant, visit the Merenid tombs for a sunset view over the medina before returning to your riad.

Day 5: Fes → Middle Atlas → Ziz Valley → Merzouga Desert

The landscape transforms dramatically today. After breakfast, we leave Fes and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains. First stop: Ifrane, nicknamed "Little Switzerland" for its alpine architecture, clean streets, and cool climate. Continue through the cedar forests near Azrou, where you can observe Barbary macaques in their natural habitat from a respectful distance.

We cross through Midelt, a region known for its apple orchards, with views of snow-capped Mount Ayachi in winter. After lunch, we descend through the spectacular Ziz Valley, where thousands of palm trees and ancient kasbahs create a lush green ribbon through the desert. Passing through Errachidia and Erfoud — famous for fossils and its annual dates market — we reach Merzouga by late afternoon.

Here, your camel awaits. Ride into the towering Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun begins to set, painting the sand in shades of gold and violet. Try sandboarding if you're feeling adventurous. Arrive at your luxury desert camp in time for mint tea, a traditional dinner, and Berber music around the campfire. Sleep in a comfortable private tent beneath a canopy of stars.

Driving time: approximately 8–9 hours with scenic stops. Pack a small backpack for the camel trek; your main luggage stays safely in the vehicle.

Day 6: Merzouga Sunrise → Todra Gorges → Dades Valley

Rise early for what may be the best sunrise of your life. Watch the dunes shift from deep purple to rose to brilliant gold as the sun climbs over the Sahara. After breakfast at camp, camel-trek back to meet your driver.

We depart the desert and drive through Rissani, the birthplace of the current Alawi dynasty, where you can explore the traditional souk if it's a market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday). Continue to Erfoud to visit a fossil workshop, then head to the Todra Gorges, a dramatic limestone canyon where 300-metre red cliff walls rise steeply from the riverbed. Enjoy lunch here and take a stroll through the canyon before driving to the Dades Valley, famous for its bizarre rock formations nicknamed "monkey fingers." Dinner and overnight in a charming hotel overlooking the valley.

Day 7: Dades Valley → Rose Valley → Skoura → Ouarzazate → Ait Benhaddou → High Atlas → Marrakech

After breakfast, we follow the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" through the Valley of the Roses, stopping in Kelaat M'Gouna to see how locals distill rose water and craft cosmetics — especially vibrant during the May Rose Festival. Continue through the palm groves of Skoura and visit the beautifully preserved 17th-century Kasbah Amridil.

In Ouarzazate — Africa's Hollywood — you can optionally visit the Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. Then comes the crown jewel: Ait Benhaddou, a fortified ksar and UNESCO World Heritage site that has starred in Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and Lawrence of Arabia. Walk its ancient mud-brick alleys and enjoy lunch with panoramic views before crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m), with dramatic mountain vistas at every turn. Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon and check into your riad in the medina.

Day 8: Marrakech Sightseeing Tour

Today is dedicated to Marrakech, the Red City. Your local guide meets you after breakfast for a full-day exploration of Marrakech's most iconic sites. Visit the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque, the opulent Bahia Palace, the serene Saadian Tombs, and the 16th-century Medersa Ben Youssef. Wander through the colorful souks, visiting different artisan areas where you can barter for spices, leather goods, ceramics, and textiles.

In the afternoon, explore the modern Gueliz district and visit the enchanting Majorelle Gardens. As evening falls, venture into the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square, where snake charmers, storytellers, musicians, and food stalls create an unforgettable sensory experience. Enjoy dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square, or explore the food stalls on your own. Overnight in your riad.

Day 9: Marrakech → Transfer to the Airport

Your nine days in Morocco come to an end today. Depending on your flight schedule, we will transfer you to Marrakech Menara Airport or Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (approximately 2.5 hours). If time allows, enjoy some last-minute souvenir shopping in the souks or a final mint tea on your riad's rooftop. Safe travels, and come back soon!
