5-Day Imperial Cities Itinerary from Marrakech

Explore Morocco's four imperial cities, the Ouzoud Waterfalls, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis on this relaxed 5-day loop.

1

Day 1: Marrakech → Ouzoud Waterfalls → Beni Mellal

We collect you from your Marrakech riad or hotel at 8:00 AM and drive north toward the Middle Atlas foothills.

Our first stop is Ouzoud Waterfalls — a three-tiered cascade that tumbles 110 meters into a river valley below. Rainbows form in the mist most mornings, and brightly colored rafts take visitors close to the base of the falls. We have lunch at one of the terraced restaurants overlooking the cascade, with views of the olive groves and woodlands that surround it.

We end the day in Beni Mellal, a market town at the edge of the Middle Atlas. Dinner and overnight in a local hotel or riad.

Overnight: Beni Mellal

2

Day 2: Beni Mellal → Azrou → Ifrane → Fes

After breakfast, we continue north through the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through cedar forests where Barbary macaques live wild — they're curious and friendly, and often come down to the roadside to investigate travelers.

We pass through Ifrane and Azrou, two alpine-style towns nicknamed "Little Switzerland" for their chalet architecture and winter snowfall. Azrou is home to one of the largest cedar forests in Morocco and an international ski resort nearby.

By late afternoon we descend into the Saïss plain and reach Fes, Morocco's spiritual and intellectual capital. You'll check into a riad inside the old medina — a restored courtyard house that feels like stepping back in time.

Overnight: Fes

3

Day 3: Fes Guided Tour

Today you'll explore Fes el-Bali, the oldest imperial city in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Founded in the 9th century by Moulay Idriss II, it's the largest car-free urban area in the world — over 9,000 streets inside ancient walls.

With a local expert guide, you'll visit the Attarine Madrasa (one of the most beautiful Koranic schools in Fes), the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts, the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II, the Chouara Tanneries, and the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University — founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri and recognized as the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

After lunch in a traditional medina restaurant, we visit Fes Jdid (the "New Fes"), the 13th-century royal city built by the Marinids.

Overnight: Fes

4

Day 4: Fes → Meknes → Volubilis → Rabat

We leave Fes after breakfast and drive west to Meknes, the imperial city of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Highlights include the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the Heri es-Souani royal granaries and stables that once housed 12,000 Andalusian horses, the Sahrij Swani basin, and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum.

After lunch we continue to Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman archaeological site in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll walk among 2,000-year-old mosaics, columns, and archways — including the famous House of Dionysus and House of the Acrobat.

We end the day in Rabat, Morocco's elegant capital. We visit the Kasbah of the Udayas (a 12th-century fortress overlooking the Atlantic), the Hassan Tower, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.

Overnight: Rabat

5

Day 5: Rabat → Casablanca → Marrakech

On our final day we drive south to Casablanca, Morocco's economic and cultural capital. Our main stop is the Hassan II Mosque — the third-largest mosque in the world and one of the few open to non-Muslim visitors. Its 210-meter minaret is the tallest in the world. Inside, you'll see the ablution rooms, the marble courtyard, the massive sliding roof, and the ornate zellige and cedar wood craftsmanship.

After the visit, we return to Marrakech (approximately 3 hours) and drop you at your riad, hotel, or the airport.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant temperatures across all regions. The Middle Atlas can see snow in winter, which is beautiful but may affect driving schedules. Summer is hot but manageable with early-morning starts.

Yes. Moroccan cuisine is naturally accommodating — tagines, couscous, and salads can easily be prepared vegetarian or vegan. Please inform us of any dietary requirements when booking, and we'll ensure the riads are prepared. Gluten-free options are also available with advance notice.

Travelers from the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, and many other countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel date. Please check with your local Moroccan consulate if you are unsure.

The Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is the local currency. Euros and US dollars are widely accepted for exchange, and ATMs are available in all major cities on the route (Marrakech, Beni Mellal, Fes, Meknes, Rabat, Casablanca). We recommend carrying some cash for lunches, tips, and small purchases in the medinas.

What Travelers Say

  • Elena & Marco - Reviewer

    TripAdvisor ★★★★★

"We only had 5 days and wanted to see the imperial cities without committing to the long desert drive. This tour was perfect. Ouzoud Waterfalls on day 1 was a beautiful surprise — we didn't expect Morocco to have scenery like that. Fes with the local guide was the highlight; we learned so much about the history. Volubilis was also a great stop. Highly recommend if you're short on time and based in Marrakech."

  • Robert & Christine - Reviewer

    TripAdvisor ★★★★★

"We're in our 60s and didn't want the bumpy camel trek, so this tour was ideal. All driving, all comfortable. Fes was incredible, and having a local guide made all the difference — you'd be lost without one. The Roman ruins at Volubilis were a nice change of pace. Our driver was patient and always stopped for photos. Would book with this company again."

  • The Williams Family - Reviewer

    TripAdvisor ★★★★★

"Travelling with our two kids (9 and 12), this was the perfect length. The Ouzoud Waterfalls were a huge hit — the kids loved the boat ride under the falls. Feeding the monkeys in Azrou was another favorite. Our guide in Fes was amazing with the children, kept them engaged the whole day. Ending in Marrakech meant we could explore the souks the next day. Would do it again in a heartbeat."
